About twothirds of countries drive on the right side. So why don’t countries that drive on the left just switch over? Lefthand side traffic was actually the worldwide norm for a long time, and the split boils down to two main factors – the fact that most people are righthanded, and the fact that countries used different forms of transportation as formalised road rules began to emerge. The invention of cars and the placement of steering wheels influenced countries to switch over to the right — as recently as 1967 for Sweden.
