South Korea's chaebols are often seen as a source of pride and identity, but they are also giant corporations that have shaped the nation's economy. Alongside other brands you might know, like Hyundai and LG, these companies are seen as companies which are above the law and basically control the government. For example, Lee Jaeyong is not the first member of his family to see the inside of a prison, his father, Lee Kunhee, was arrested and charged for paying bribes to then President Roh Taewoo in 1996. The President that followed, Kim Youngsam, controversially pardoned him for his crime.
Gen. Park Chunghee, South Korea's controversial historic leader, fromed a partnership between the government and the private sector was developed that still dominates South Korean politics and economics today. We expolre this and more in this video.
