Why Poland??? and Powazki Cemetery

Becoming Bev

Why Poland you might ask. Poland has been the biggest surprise of everywhere I’ve been. Honestly I had no idea. This video is the first in a 3 or 4 part series. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Powazki Cemetery
The oldest and best known Catholic cemetery in Warsaw, founded in November of 1790. Since it’s establishment a million people have been buried there, including many well known distinguished Poles. The exact number is hard to define because the cemetery’s books were destroyed in World War II

All of the cemetery grounds are deemed a National Monument.

It was designed by Dominik Merlini, the royal architect to King Stanislaw August Poniatowski. The remains of the kings family is buried in the catacombs here

You will come across the graves of many eminent writers, scholars, artists, politicians, entrepreneurs and social activists.
The first to be buried there was writer and Nobel Prize winner Wladyslaw Reymont.

It covers an area of 44 hectares, which makes it bigger than Vatican City.
44 hectares is the equivalent of over 108 acres.

It’s best to visit the cemetery on All Souls Day, which is November 1st. Poles come to the graves of their relatives and the cemetery is lit up by thousands of candles.
