When it comes to credit card rewards, there are two sides to getting value: earnings and redemptions.

I’ve always focused on trying to craft the perfect credit card setup to maximize earnings, whether that be through cash back, points and miles, or more recently, a mix of both.

But I’ve never really placed a big emphasis on the redemption side.

I believe it’s important for you to control how you use your points and miles and not let the centperpoint trap dictate your use of them.

Having said that, there also has to be balance because it’s still important not to undervalue your points and get a belowaverage or even a downright terrible redemption.

Cents per point is the calculation that lets you know how much money or value you get from redeeming a certain number of points.

For example, if you saw an airline ticket for $100, or 10,000 cents, and used 10,000 points for the redemption, that would yield a value of 1 cents per point.

There are a lot of other reasons why you would book a redemption, such as booking the exact flight you want on the exact day you want for airfare and booking your preferred location at a hotel you have status when it comes to hotels.

This may be a controversial take, but I explain a recent domestic redemption I did from Los Angeles, CA to Washington, DC to illustrate my thought process in how I use points and miles to make my travel plans.
