Patients with massive pulmonary embolism have large amount of dead space but don't get hypercapnic. Increased dead space ventilation is compensated by increased minute ventilation. However, COPD patients have excessive dead space but easily become hypercapnic. In this lecture, we discuss why that happens and how to treat these COPD patients.
