Why Do I Love a Dunnock That Visits My Garden?

Every morning, a flash of brown darts through the climbing roses by the back gate. It's my dunnock, a feathered Houdini, a master of disguise amongst the tangled stems. Unlike the robins, bold as brass on the patio, the dunnock prefers the shadows. It flits and flicks its tail, a nervous counterpoint to the chirping sparrows.



This little dunnock is a puzzle. Sometimes it seems utterly alone, a solitary speck hunting for spiders amongst the fallen leaves. Yet, other days, a second dunnock, a wisp of grey, will flit alongside, and their quiet chirps turn into a soft, melodic duet. Are they courting? Sharing secrets in their own language?


One thing is certain, my dunnock has become a familiar friend. It brings a touch of the wild into my garden, a reminder of the hidden lives that thrive just beyond the reach of my hand. And who knows, maybe one day, this little Houdini will allow me to witness the magic of a dunnock chick, peeking from a nest woven amongst the rose thorns.
