Hey guys! So you’re here because your puppy is eating POOP! There is a term for poop eating and it’s called “Corprophagy” First let me explain one thing so you can understand why puppies eat poop.
Mom dogs lick puppies genital areas to stimulate them to poop and pee and with that behavior they eat their puppies poop and drink their pee. This also keeps their living den clean and free of poop, pee and then maggots and bugs infesting their living area. Mom dogs stop eating their puppies poop around 34 weeks old when the puppies get teeth and start eating puppy food.

Reason 1:
Puppies eyes open at 2 weeks old. So for about 1 week they witness their moms poop eating behavior and this may be the first reason why they may eat poop and its because they learned it from their mom!

Reason 2:
Some other reasons puppies will eat poop is because they are still hungry and they find poop in their welping box and eat it! This then becomes a habit and they do it all the time. Gross.

So a way to avoid this is by always keeping their welping box clean 23x a day and offering the puppies enough food and making sure the runt doesn’t get kicked out of the eating circle.

Reason 3:
Puppies that are left in their crate for too long with their own poop may eat their poop from boredom, stress and being hungry.

Reason #4
Not getting enough food. Puppies that aren’t fed enough may still be hungry and eat their poop. So make sure you are feeding your puppies enough. Talk to your veterinarian and they can help you with what and how much food to be feeding your puppy.

Reason #5.
Dogs and puppies are very smart creatures. They may eat their poop to hide the evidence that they pottied in the house!

So for puppies it is actually quite normal for them to eat poop. Yup I said it, its normal.
But it isn’t good for them to eat their poop because they can reinfect themselves with normal puppy parasites , most commonly giardia!, and it can also lead to diarrhea.

Most puppies will eventually grow out of eating there poop but here are

5 Ways to prevent your puppy from eating poop are:

1. Make sure your puppy has enough food and getting enough nutrients
2. Frequent walks to go potty!
3. Keeping their crate clean and free of poop for them to eat
4. Provide your puppy with lots of bones and toys to chew on so they don’t go for their poop if your not home in time.
5. There are supplements you can get from your vet that will make the poop taste bad! So call your vet and speak to them about getting that!
