Japanese car brands sell very well almost everywhere in the world, particularly in the United States. For example, Toyota, a Japanese brand, ranked second as the bestselling brand in the North American country in 2020 and Honda another Japanese brand ranked fourth. In contrast, of the 4.9 million vehicles sold in Japan (2016), just over 13,000 were U.S. brands. In total, those brands hold only 0.3% of the Japanese market. In fact, Ford pulled out of Japan in 2017 due to poor sales performance.

So the question is: Why did U.S. cars fail in Japan?
