Would you like to see why alpacas have become such popular pets in such a short amount of time?

Is it because of their kindness, beauty, the money one can earn from selling their fleece, or is there something else that's special about these animals?

10. Alpacas have a therapeutic effect.

Although most people are already familiar with therapy dogs, an increasing number of hospitals and therapy institutes are introducing alpaca therapy.

Why?

In most cases, people become noticeably happier after cuddling with an alpaca. It lifts their spirits and makes them more open to everything.

9. Alpacas have expensive, hypoallergenic fleece.

Alpaca fiber is warm and, unlike sheep wool, it doesn't itch.

It has no lanolin, making it hypoallergenic and allowing treatment that doesn't require high temperatures or harsh chemicals when washing.

8. Alpacas are waterresistant.

Same as wool, alpaca fiber is waterresistant.

These attributes make alpaca fiber feel lighter than wool but still warmer than cotton in cold and humid climates.

Does alpaca fiber come in multiple colors?

Yes, 22 colors and hundreds of different shades!

7. Alpacas are flameresistant.

More precisely, it's their fiber that is flameresistant.

They meet the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's strict testing specifications, making them a class 1 fiber for use in clothing and various furnishings.

6. Alpacas are very popular.

In 1984, a small group of importers brought a carefully selected herd of alpacas into Canada and the U.S.

This little North American herd grew from a couple of Alpacas in zoos and private farms to about 20,000 alpacas today.

Do they have a holiday?

Believe it or not, they do! Alpaca farmers celebrate the National Alpaca Farm Days each year during the last week of September.

5. Alpacas predominantly give birth in the morning.

Why in the morning? It's related to life in the high deserts of South America, where temperatures reach extreme lows at night.

By delivering babies in the morning, they will have the entire day to get dry, start walking around, and start nursing before the temperatures begin to drop.

4. It's inadvisable to own only one alpaca.

It's not okay to only adopt one alpaca that has no contact with others.

They have strong herd instincts, and they need the company of other alpacas to lead a happy life.

3. Alpacas love sunbathing.

Lying in the field and soaking up the sun is one of their favorite activities.

Although this seems to sound very simple, it's good to keep it in mind since it can often look as if they're dead in such a position.

However, don't worry they are doing very well indeed.

2. Alpacas communicate using nonverbal signs and sounds.

Alpacas tend to spit when they're afraid or in trouble, and they use their tails to express their feelings.

All camelids use spitting to communicate their displeasure, fear, or dominance.

1. Alpacas are highly intelligent and friendly.

Other than looking way too cute, these beautiful creatures are quite intelligent.

They're smart and easy to train while they're still young.

Some owners even teach them to navigate through obstacles, so alpacas often appear in various shows and competitions!

Alpacas and other pets?

Yes! Alpacas are friendly, gentle, curious animals that make for extraordinary pets.

They have a pronounced herd instinct and like living with other alpacas, but they do well with other species too, such as goats, llamas, sheep, house pets, etc.

These animals are beautiful both on the inside and outside, and we should also treat them accordingly.
