Who’s Getting Rich from Moroccan Hash?

Follow
BBC News عربي

BBC Arabic investigates the production, consumption and trade of hash from its number one exporter, Morocco, to your local dealer. We discover the plight of the people who grow it, watch its massive escalation in value as it reaches its European smokers, and discover the illicit tricks Dutch coffeeshops use to sell it.

In Morocco’s impoverished northern Rif region farmers grow cannabis illegally under the eye of the authorities. Some 40,000 of them are wanted for arrest, paying bribes to evade it from their meagre earnings of under 100 USD a month.

Across the water, armed Spanish police are waging a dangerous round the clock campaign against traffickers from Morocco who bring hundreds of tonnes a year of cannabis resin, hashish, into Europe.

A lot of it is heading to Amsterdam, where public consumption of recreational cannabis is tolerated but the importation of it is illegal. The high demand – it is a billion dollar industry in the Netherlands is open to exploitation by criminal gangs with links to the cocaine trade, people trafficking and money laundering.
