Here's another Trademark Health Tip from the Trademark Doctor.

I often get asked, "What's the difference between a Trademark and a copyright?"

A trademark is a word or logo that indicates the source of goods or services.

These are things like "Nike" for shoes.

Or maybe the Nike "swoosh" logo.

Things that indicate what company makes those goods.

A copyright is the right of authors to prevent others from printing, publishing, or copying their work.

This is different than a trademark, because it has nothing to do with goods and services, and everything to do with protecting artistic and literary creations.

What is covered by copyright? Anything original that you create.

It could be a song, a poem, a sales letter, a novel, a movie, computer software, a painting.

To get technical, copyright protects "original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression."

This video, for example, is protected by copyright law. So don't go and copy it, mmmkay?
