What is the difference between Federal Department and Federal Agencies?
In Department of Defense, agencies may also be called "commands"
A 'department' is the highest level – for example, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Health and Human Services
On the civilian side, below the department are 'agencies'. For example, NIH or CDC
In DOD, the Department of Navy is the department and the command which would be the 'agency'.
Commands are called major commands or buying commands.
