So what is Modal? Did you know it’s becoming increasingly popular in the apparel industry? Did you know it’s actually made from trees? We break it down in this video.

I know what you’re thinking. Fabric made from trees doesn’t sound very comfortable but it’s actually super soft. And that’s due in part because of how Modal is made.

Modal starts with a beech tree farm. The trees are harvested, cut up, mashed into liquid and then turned into fiber strands. Those modal fibers are usually blended with cotton and spandex fibers giving it a soft touch and stretchability. That sounds pretty good right? Here are some more benefits to Modal.

It’s 50% more absorbent than cotton yet breathable, holds the dye in the fabric really well, resulting in lasting, vibrant colors and no dye bleeding. You can also screen print onto Modal, if that’s your scene.

Modal, however, is not perfect and since we want to be totally transparent here at shirtspace so you know exactly what you’re buying, here are a couple drawbacks beech tree farmers might not want you to hear.

Although some people like to refer to Modal as a sustainable product, it is a heavily processed product that uses chemicals to convert the beech wood to modal fabric. And it does have a tendency to shrink. Although blending it with cotton greatly reduces that risk.

Those are the only two real drawbacks though and it’s currently cheaper to produce than cotton and requires less water.

When it’s all said and done, Modal is a soft, durable, vibrant alternative to cotton and we at shirtspace are certain you’ll be seeing more and more of it in the coming years.
