What is a capsular contracture? This occurs when the scar tissue or capsule that normally forms around the implant tightens and squeezes the implant. This typically happens when the body has a response of the immune system to foreign materials in the human body. In simplest terms, your body recognizes a foreign object and tries to fight back against it. This commonly happens with breast implants but can happen with any artificial knee or hip implants, as well.

Why does it happen and when does it happen? 75% of all capsular contractures happen within two years of the initial procedure. To treat this, you have to physically remove the current implant and capsule and replace it with a new implant. However, the more surgeries you have, the more risk you have of bacterial contamination and the risk of capsular contracture.
