We Met a Family of Wild Marmots in Dolomites

Follow
Hello Aelita

My 3week rock climbing holiday began here, and I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I met a family of surprisingly friendly wild marmots! It was truly a oneofakind experience and a highlight of my trip. It made me so happy that I wanted to share this happiness with you!

When this climbing crag began to be developed, the marmots gradually became friendly with climbers, and that's how this incredible story began. These marmots have been local celebrities for years now, and this place is always bustling with tourists who come to see these friendly animals up close.

But here's the amazing part these marmots also get a break from the human hustle and bustle. They hibernate for several months each year, enjoying some peace and quiet.

Heavy rain can make this spot inaccessible, as you need to cross a river to get here. So, in many ways, these marmots have found as much of a balance as possible in such special circumstances.

Their natural diet consists of grass, herbs, and insects. And even with all the attention they get, they haven't lost their foraging skills. I've seen them searching for food every morning.

Marmots are usually not peoplefriendly and will run and hide if approached.
If visiting, wait for them to approach you rather than the other way around.
This family, like any other marmot colony, has a sentinel marmot who will whistle to warn others when approached, prompting them to hide.

It's worth noting that this is a unique situation, and not an encouragement to start feeding wildlife. In fact, I want to clarify that you should never feed wild animals. This is a truly exceptional situation where marmots have been around people for several generations, and they've adapted in their own unique way.

Happy hiking and marmotspotting!
