A float switch is a type of level sensor, a device used to detect the level of liquid within a tank. The switch may be used to control a pump, as an indicator, an alarm, or to control other devices.

How does a float switch work?
In short, a float switch is a mechanical switch that floats on top of a liquid surface. As the liquid level goes up or down, it moves vertically with the liquid level. Depending on the counterweight and preset 'trigger', the mechanical switch opens or closes allowing an electrical current through it to the connected device. Typically, this connected device either stops or starts the inflow of the liquid.
