Water power is bringing great changes to the face of Africa, and in the harnessing of the waters Africans are learning and employing new skills. In this issue, Look at Life goes to see the opening of the great Kariba Dam and takes a look at the people who have built it. Not so many years ago, local labour would have been used only for the most unskilled jobs. But at Kariba, Africans showed how effective they could be as tractor drivers, welders, electricians and at many other skilled and semiskilled tasks. Here is a picture of vivid contrast of traditional practices flourishing side by side with twentiethcentury technology. It is not only a story of a dam, it is one more stage in the march of a continent.
