Kindergarten subtraction is often taught in winter or spring after kids have firmly established math skills in onetoone counting and addition. Teachers should consider the sequence of each lesson plan, as new concepts should be introduced in a concrete format, then pictorial, and lastly abstract. This means early subtraction lessons do not need to be written in equation form, and certainly do not need to include a minus symbol or equal symbol. Instead of a worksheet, the first learning activities should be in word problem form with objects that can be seen and grabbed. This way as the teacher tells the story with words such as: take away, less, decrease, lost, gave, etc. the students will actually see and feel a set of objects getting smaller in number. This is the place to start for the beginner so they can conceptually understand what subtraction means. Remember, what is simple to us is a whole new world to the little ones. Once this is established, teachers can slowly scaffold in more complex portions of subtracting and strategies to use in solving. After concrete items (counting cubes) are mastered with an equation, the teacher can teach: using fingers to solve, pictures, number line, counting back, and counting up. Quiz to check for mastery before moving on. From here the child can move to 2 digit problems, number bonds, and automaticity within 20. All this lays a foundation for what is to come in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and beyond when students will be expected to work with 3 digits or more and regrouping or borrowing.
