Wild pigs are running amok across large parts of the US, causing an estimated $1.5 billion in damage each year. In Louisiana alone more than 500,000 of the feral hogs are thought to be on the loose.
The animals which can weigh up to 400lbs reproduce quickly, have no natural predators and adapt to survive in any environment. As well as the damage they cause to agricultural land, the wild hogs pose a public health risk because they can be riddled with disease. Benjamin Zand from BBC Pop Up talked to farmers, trappers and scientists in Louisiana about the most effective and humane way to control the feral pig population.
