Walk from Kayaköy (Ghost village) to the Blue lagoon in Ölüdeniz Turkey

Postcard from us...

We visited Kayakoy in October, as you can see the weather was still lovely but not too hot!
At the time of our visit the entrance fee to the Ghost village was 60 Turkish lira.

We traveled to Kayaköy on the Dolmuş. Which we caught from the mini bus Dolmus station in Fethiye.
The bus runs regularly and the journey takes about 20 minutes, depending on the traffic in Fethiye, the bus will drop you off near to the entrance to the Ghost village.

There are numerous restaurants and cafes in the occupied part of the village to stop and have a rest and get something to eat before starting the walk. There is nowhere to buy anything on the walk so remember to get everything you need beforehand.

The abandoned part of Kayaköy, or ghost village as it is also called, is a deserted village near to Fethiye in Turkey.

This part of the village was inhabited by greek Orthodox christians, and was abandoned in the early 1920’s as a result of a population exchange between Greece and turkey at the end of the GrecoTurkish war. After the residents left the buildings were left empty and fell into disrepair.

As you can see it covers quite a large area with only the shells of the houses remaining.

It is now an open air museum. With about 500 houses, 2 churches, 14 chapels and a number of other municipal buildings including a school.

The walk from Kayaköy to Ölüdeniz takes about 4 hours depending on how fast you walk! We took longer as we stopped for a picnic and took lots of pictures, the views are amazing!

We followed the blue/red/yellow trail markers, coloured paint on the sides of buildings in Kayaköy and on the rocks along the trail, which can be a little tricky to follow at the start of the walk but worth persevering as there are stunning views from the top.
The trail starts at the south east side of the village and climbs up through the pine forest. The trees offer some welcome shade if it is hot. I prefer to do this walk in spring and Autumn when it is cooler.

I would recommend a good pair of walking boots, but I have seen people walking the trail in flipflops!
The other end of the walk is the Blue Lagoon near to the resort of Ölüdeniz. We stopped at The Sugar Beach Club for something to eat and a cold beer.
Sugar Beach Club also has accommodation and sun beds.

The resort of Ölüdeniz has plenty of places to relax and unwind after spending a day walking.
There is a regular Dolmus service back to Fethiye.
