Pathological narcissism has multiple faces and presentations, but according to Diana Diamond they all share an inability to regulate normal narcissistic needs, and this causes distortions in personality.

Three variants of narcissistic pathology are highfunctioning (grandiose), vulnerable & malignant. Diamond explains the difference between them in terms of level of personality organization.
