Historic Hawaii Foundation

Historic Hawai‘i Foundation, in partnership with the Department of the Interior’s National Park Service, created a free workshop on how to research your property and neighborhood on Saturday, July 23, 2022.Funding support was provided by Mālama Mānoa Educational Endowment Fund.

Designed for people who want to do the research themselves, this virtual workshop is appropriate for homeowners and community groups, educators and students, and others interested in learning the history of their properties and neighborhoods.

The recording shares a panel discussion with subject matter experts addressing questions such as:
• Why would I care about the history of my home/Why research the history of your property?
• What types of information do I need to start my research?
• Where do I start ?
• Where can I find information about my property and neighborhood, such as who designed, constructed my home?
• How do I keep track of/organize my research?
• Why consider nominating my property to the state or national register?
• What are some unexpected sources of information: social media, places in the past? including fortuitous finds, unconventional resources, etc.

Research and documentation may be pursued for a variety of reasons including nomination for the historic register, inquiry for documentation purposes, and/or discover the history for personal satisfaction and to share stories with family and friends. The focus is how to organize the methodology, track results, document outcomes and sources, and synthesize information into a useful format.
