Video and Conformation Dog Show Training

Italian Greyhounds

Dana Taylor here, with Dainty Acres.  I sure appreciate you watching my videos, please subscribe so you can find the next video when it gets posted.  I show pure bred Italian Greyhound dogs, and I use video to help me see what the Judge sees when we are in the ring.

At home when we are practicing,  I grab my $80 Tripod and my Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G.  I record every training and show ring session because the vantage point of my eyes looking down at my dog is like a jet at 10,000 feet.  I can not see what my dog is doing.  So I record our movements at two different vantages.  My dog is a small toy breed and stands 14" off the ground at her withers.  Her vantage, her view through her eyes,  is 14" to 16".  She has to look up at me to see what I am doing, and to see my hand signs.

The Judge stands 56' tall and sees his view from a much higher vantage than my dog.  My vantage is straight ahead as we gait around the ring, and I stand under 5'.  My dog's vantage, my vantage and the Judges vantage are all totally different.  If I want to win in the show ring, It doesn't matter what I see, it only matters what the judge sees.  So I want to record video at both my dog's vantage as well as the judges vantage to see what my dog is doing and to see things the way the Judge sees them.

How many times have you hear someone say, "We should have won that class.  I can't believe that dog won."  The handler in the ring can not see what the Judge is seeing.  But if you want to win, you should probably figure out a way to see like a Judge.  Since I want to win, my hack for seeing things from the Judges vantage is to shoot video at the height and location of a Judge.

Here is what I use, I have a nice but not super expensive Tripod with a cell phone holder mounted on it.  Because I am recording at 2 different vintages, I want the retractable legs so I can raise and drop the legs depending on if I am recording to see my dog's vantage or the Judge's.

the editing is a super important part of my dog training.  what I find 9 time out of 10 is that I am doing something to cause my dog to loose it.
