Vestibulo-ocular reflex neuroanatomy

Follow
Sam Webster

When the head moves the eyes move in the opposite direction to maintain the direction of the eyes towards the object being looked at. This is managed by a somewhat complex yet elegant arrangement of the vestibular apparatus in the inner ear (semicircular canals, saccule and utricle) detecting movement, sending information to the brainstem via the vestibulocochlear nerve, and relays between vestibular and oculomotor nuclei delivering appropriate outputs to the extraocular muscles so that the eyes are moved together in the correct direction.
