Emergency birth control can be taken anytime after unprotected sex but when does it work best?
If Plan B is taken during the menstruation period, will it still delay ovulation?

Ovulation and the rest of the menstrual cycle happen due to a collaboration between the brain, ovaries and womb using chemical messengers called hormones.
At the start of the cycle, the level of some hormones gradually increases.
One of them is LH.
#.1 LH helps to mature the follicles in the ovary, and by the middle of the cycle, one follicle is mature and an egg is ready for release.
Just before that follicle reaches that maturation stage, the LH hormone levels suddenly shoot up the LH surge.
After this point, ovulation is only a matter of time.
Usually, by 48 hrs after the surge, the follicle will burst and release the ovary.

Now the plan B pill and others like it work to temporarily prevent ovulation and works best before the surge, roughly two days before the follicle bursts to release the egg.

#. 2 While you shed blood during menstruation, your ovary is already starting to mature the follicle that will be released during the current month!
