The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is an agile, playful, and spirited breed. It has a compact, squarely proportioned body with a moderately long, rectangular head in appearance. Its tail is highset tail and either docked or kept natural. It also has a single, wavy coat which comes in various shades of wheaten color. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier puppies are born dark brown and lighten to the final adult wheaten color by around two years old. There are also two coat varieties: American and Irish. The Irish’s coat tends to be thinner and silkier. Discover more about our Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier puppies for sale below!

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are an agile and strong breed. They are also playful and friendly. The Soft Coated Wheaten is an alert dog which barks at the arrival of guests, making it a great watchdog. They are typically loving towards children and get along well with other dogs. However, an unsocialized Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier with a meek owner can end up being aggressive towards other dogs and cats. Being sweetnatured, this breed can have a puppylike attitude which remains with them throughout their life.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier needs a moderate amount of exercise and a daily walk. It is also moderately active indoors and a small yard is fine. They can live in an apartment as long as they get enough exercise. However, this breed does not tolerate too much heat very well.

The Soft Coated Wheaten has a wavy coat with a soft, silky texture. The coat doesn’t fully develop until the dog is mature, so a puppy may lack the wavy coat seen in the adult coat or coloring with black tips. The adult Wheaten wavy coat and coloring should develop around two years old.

The Wheaten’s coat tangles easily, so brush and comb it daily to keep the coat tangle free. A slick brush and stainless steel comb are preferred for this. It is also recommended to bathe and trim the dog’s coat every four to six weeks to keep the coat styled.

The Soft Coated Wheaten doesn’t really shed in the spring and fall, but loose hair should be combed out of the coat from time to time. A wellgroomed dog will shed very little. Due to the type of coat it has, this breed may be good for allergy suffers as well.

As with all dogs, basic care is standard: trim the nails as needed, brush the teeth frequently, and check the ears weekly for dirt, discoloration, and odor (a sign of possible infection).

Begin grooming your Wheaten when it is young. This teaches the puppy grooming is a normal part of life and to accept the handling and fuss that comes with grooming.

One of the oldest Irish breeds, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier originated in Ireland and is a relative of the Kerry Blue Terrier and Irish Terrier. Back then it was known as the “poor man’s dog” because it worked on farms as herders, protecting, and as a hunter of vermin and small game. Some of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier’s talents include watchdog, hunting, herding, and ratter.
