Markus Hofmann (Head of Applications Platforms
and Software Systems Lab, Nokia Bell Labs) leads a session with Timothy Roscoe (Full Professor in the Systems Group of the Computer Science Department at ETH Zurich) and Marina Thottan (Head of E2E Network and Service Automation Lab, Nokia Bell Labs) about the Kernel and how the future of software development and new computing platforms need to be built on very different principles drawing from the early learnings of Unix.

We commemorated Unix’s anniversary with the Unix50 event, a twoday celebration that reflected on Unix’s past and explored the future of computing. Speakers and panelists included many of the original team that built Unix and designed the C programming language, as well as luminaries in the fields of computing and robotics. The event also featured a gallery of Unix artifacts, a coding challenge that required students to program robots to navigate the industrial spaces of the future, and numerous other activities drawing on Unix’s rich and colorful history at Bell Labs.
