Understanding Flexibility

Follow
Hose Master

We use hoses in so many different applications BECAUSE they can flex! So it's important to understand flexibility, and the main performance attribute that we use called the “MINIMUM BEND RADIUS.”

The “minimum bend radius” (or MBR) is the point to which the hose can be bent without risking damage. There are a few specific things to remember when measuring the bend requirements of the application:

►The minimum bend can be expressed as a radius or a diameter. Keep this in mind when looking at a manufacturer’s specs.

►In both cases, we start the measurement from the centerline of the hose (in the middle). This can make a difference as the hose gets larger in size or the bend requirements become tighter.

►Finally, metal hoses have 2 measurements instead of just 1 for nonmetal hoses: static and dynamic.

►Dynamic is the tightest the hose can be bent and cycled to, meaning it can be bent that tightly, relaxed and then bent to that point again over and over without additional damage. The static measurement is tighter, and therefore a smaller bend, but assumes that the hose will NOT be cycling in service, so the hose can be bent farther without affecting the hose life.
