KPV Collection

This, with a few additions, is the first audio tape I made after arriving on Udot. It is to my grandfather, Oliver J. Schoonmaker, who died at age 85 while I was in the Peace Corps. He was always supportive and proud of my life choices and it is special to hear our communication again.

During the first decade of the U.S Peace Corps, established by President JF Kennedy, PC held its first incountry training in the U.S. Trusteeship of Micronesia.. Micro V was trained on the island of Udot in the Truk/Chuuk lagoon after staging in California. 207 trainees began training with 140 becoming volunteers. They were English teachers (TESL), communication experts and secretaries. Training included Language, Area Studies, Community Development, Health, PE, Swimming, & TESL. Trainers were Experienced PC Volunteers, Language and Culture informants, Area experts, PC doctors and nurses, District leaders & Educators..

A special thanks to Gerry Milkie for sharing his photographs from Micro I training and from when he was a trainer during Micro V training. There are three other YouTube stories about the experiences of Kit and Greg Porter during Micro V training. Complete content is in digitized audio tapes: kit070, P616, kit037A, kit038, kit075, kit039, kit039B. These may be available in the future. Original photos and photos from books are from the kpvcollection.
