As a sophomore, Mathieu was named first team AllAmerican, first team AllSEC and was invited to New York City as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

Mathieu also won the Bednarik Award (College Defensive Player of the Year) and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
