Turbo Wastegate Testing – Vacuum and Pressure Controlled | Tech Tip

In this video we demonstrate how to test a vacuum actuated and a pressure actuated turbocharger wastegate. For the vacuum actuated wastegate, ensure it is normally closed and watch the rod while applying a vacuum to verify its full range of motion. A properly functioning actuator should move smoothly and hold the vacuum without any issues.

Now, for the pressure actuated wastegate, we need to switch the nipples on our vacuum side to the pressure side, connecting it to the pressure actuator. Following the same principle, apply pressure and observe the rod's movement. The goal is to make sure it holds the pressure while remaining open. For this type of wastegate, it is normally closed, so when we release the pressure, the wastegate should return to its fully closed position.

By performing these tests on both types of actuators, you can ensure they are functioning correctly. This step is crucial in diagnosing any issues related to the wastegate's operation and overall turbocharger performance.

We hope this demonstration proves helpful in your future turbocharger wastegate testing endeavors. Stay tuned for more insightful tips!
