Tuberculosis is the infection of the lungs caused by a bacteria named Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is a chronic disease that is progressive as well as contagious. In addition to lungs, the bacteria can also infect the bones, kidneys and brain.
Tuberculosis (TB) is known to be one of the oldest diseases among humans and today, it’s one of the leading causes of infection and death in adults. According to the World Health Organization about 1/3rd of the world’s population is suffering from this disease at present. Although there’s a live attenuated vaccine antibiotics used all around the world, the morbidity rate persists with 2 million people dying every year globally. Africa, Western Pacific and Southeast Asia are the most affected areas, making up the world’s 86% of Tuberculosis cases.
TB is contagious, it can spread from an infected person to a healthy person through air by inhaling the airborne droplet nuclei of the infected person. These airborne particles come from infected persons through sneezing, coughing, laughing and other forced respiratory acts, which is why someone close to an infected person on daily basis will be at higher risk of getting infected, for example if they share the same room.
