I was recently performing chamber music in Washington DC with some of my friends at Dumbarton Oaks. While there, we took a day trip to the Smithsonian Institution to try out their stunning collection of instruments. Somehow, we ended up sightreading through the Brahms G Major sextet. The ‘decorated’ Stradivarius instruments are among the most expensive in the world and…we played on a set of them! These instruments are priceless and in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian (but…Strad violins seem to fetch $520 million and…well...these are really, really rare examples!)
