In this video, I go through how we travel to Australia legally towing with a Ford Ranger. This video applies to all towing vehicle setups, not just if you're tow vehicle is a Ford Ranger.

Before you watch this video, it's worth familiarising yourself with the terms and acronyms down below.

ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) The total weight of a trailer (or caravan) including payload. This is specified by the trailer manufacturer.

GTM (Gross Trailer Mass) The weight of a trailer (or caravan), including the payload imposed on its wheels when attached to the tow vehicle (ATMTBM). This is specified by the trailer manufacturer.

TBM (Tow Ball Mass) The weight a trailer imposes on the tow ball of the tow vehicle. This is generally specified by the trailer manufacturer. The vehicle or towbar manufacturer may also specify a maximum TBM.

TARE the weight of a vehicle or trailer when empty.

GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) The total weight of a vehicle, including payload (accessories, passengers, fuel, etc.). Also includes TBM when in combination. This is specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

GCM (Gross Combination Mass) The combined total weight of a vehicle and trailer (or caravan) including payload when connected. This is specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Towing Capacity The maximum ATM which can be connected to a vehicle. This is specified by the vehicle manufacturer. The vehicle or towbar manufacturer will generally also specify a maximum TBM.
