TOEFL Reading Question Types and Strategies Part 2

I explain three question types that can appear in TOEFL Reading and I show you strategies on how to solve them. We have a look at Summary Questions, Organization Questions, and Table Questions. You can solve these question types very quickly if you use the right strategies. I tell you tips and tricks you can use to improve your TOEFL Reading score significantly. Use these strategies for these question types and get a high score in TOEFL Reading.

1) Summary Questions
If you get a summary question in TOEFL Reading, you are given an introductory sentence of a summary and several answer choices. You have to choose the answers that express the most important ideas of the passage.

Strategy: Eliminate Wrong Answers
Some of the answers talk about points that are not mentioned in the TOEFL Reading passage. Have a look at each answer and then go to the passage and figure out which answers do not appear in the passage. You can eliminate these answers immediately. Other answers talk about minor points in the passage. It can be quite tricky to figure out whether an answer talks about a minor or a major point. This is the easiest way to figure this out: Go to the part of the passage where the information is mentioned and think about the context. Then ask yourself: Is this a major point or a minor point? If it is a minor point, eliminate this answer. The answers that are left are correct. This strategy is powerful because it helps you find the correct answers quickly and thus improves your TOEFL Reading score.

2) Organization Questions
You will immediately recognize organization questions in TOEFL Reading because there are black squares in the passage. You are given a sentence and you are asked to figure out where the sentence would best fit each black square is a possible solution.

Strategy: Trial and Error
1. Read the relevant part in the passage to get a general idea of what it is about.
2. Take the sentence and insert it in each square. Ask yourself: Does this make sense?
3. Choose the square that makes the most sense.

3) Table Questions
If you get a table question in TOEFL Reading, you get a list of answer choices on one side and two categories on the other side. You have to categorize information given in the passage.

Strategy: Eliminate and Categorize
Some of the answers are not mentioned in the passage or change information. Have a look at each answer, then go to the relevant part of the passage and check whether the information given appears in the passage. If it does not, the answer is wrong and you eliminate it. If it appears, have a look at the context and figure out to which category it belongs. This strategy will make it easier for you to figure out the correct category.
