** NOTES:

Water Canyon Arch is amazing and it's possible to walk out on the arch but one must remember it is surrounded by sheer cliffs over 1000' above the canyon floor. My "invisible selfie stick" wideangle camera actually makes the walk look worse than it really is, BUT... it's still NOT a place to be too casual or at all careless. It may not be apparent in the video, but I was extremely focused and careful. I trust my years of experience walking on sandstone like this. The first part of the arch is actually quite wide and level, but after 20' or so it begins to narrow and becomes more precarious. It is possible to continue past the wide section, but I didn't feel comfortable doing so. Do not attempt if you have any doubt! For reference... I've seen video of people with dogs running across this arch (not advised IMHO!)

offtrail or crosscountry hiking is allowed in Capitol Reef, but involves risk and should only be attempted by experienced hikers with excellent navigation skills and comfort in scrambling over rough terrain. Portions of this route can be extremely dangerous for the uninitiated. Before heading out on such an adventure, one should inform others of the plan and the anticipated completion date/time. Carry plenty of water as it's sparse in many areas. All backcountry camping within the national park requires a permit.

camping in Grand StaircaseEscalante National Monument and the San Rafael Swell requires a permit in many locations. These regulations seem to be in flux and have changed again recently. Please see the official websites for the latest info.
