How to replace a thermopile on a water heater. Since almost all major brands of atmospherically vented water heaters have switched from a thermocouple to a thermopile system, here's a stepbystep tutorial on replacing your thermopile.

Example tank is a John Wood 40 gallon: Model AV40N
Same tank as A.O. Smith 40 gallon: Model GCRL 40

Many other models from A.O. Smith, John Wood, GSW, Whirlpool, State, Kenmore, Reliance, and Bradford White use the same pilot assembly and procedure.
