The Nile, through its nourishing floods, allowed the pharaonic civilization to flourish on its banks, between the 4th and 1st millennium BC. The river was also the only route of communication between two worlds: Upper Egypt, communicating with Africa and Lower Egypt, opening onto the Mediterranean. The Nile also became a pretext for another, more symbolic opposition: between life on earth and life in the afterlife. According to a fairly widespread idea, this concept governed the spatial organization of the pharaonic cities.
