The SINGLE WORST THING You Can Do With Your Dog

When raising and training a dog, we all make mistakes on varying levels, some of them having no longterm effects. BUT, once in a while, we make those big issues that set us back big time, and I’m here to share with you the ONE mistake I made with Mochi recently so you can avoid doing the same then, and don’t forget to stay tuned until the end because I will be going over how I fixed slash am fixing it.

Let’s jump right into the worst thing you can do with your dog, and that is TOO MUCH FREEDOM. The reason why I say this is a mistake is because I worked so, so hard on both looseleash walking and staying close when offleash, and giving Mochi too much freedom later on has seriously set us back by months of training. If you have a young puppy, walking them only offleash is even worse than giving them too much freedom later on in life because it’s always easier to go from nicely walking onleash to walking nicely offleash than vise versa.

We all know being offleash is more fun for dogs usually, and it’s easier for us to walk at our own pace when they’re off leash. But, being offleash for every walk when your dog is still young and impressionable is actually super harmful for your training. Your dog gets too comfortable with being not attached to you, and when you can’t enforce them with a leash, they can also get used to things like straying far away or not listening to recall.

So, how do you avoid or fix the consequences of too much freedom? It’s actually really simple, and that’s by trying to fit in one onleash walk every single day, even if you live somewhere where your dog can essentially be offleash for every walk. By having your dog comfortable with walking nicely on a leash, your dog will learn to stay close to you at all times because they will be so used to walking next to you.

With Mochi, my big mistake was that he is still very impressionable and I thought he was ready to be offleash for days without doing a few leashed walks, so we really got set back in our training.

So, the lesson to be learned here and a mistake I can hopefully help other people avoid is giving your dog too much freedom and not enough structure. If you liked this video, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and comment below your thoughts!
