The St Cuthbert Gospel of St John, is the earliest complete book in western Europe. Made in the early 8th century in the Venerable Bede's monastery at MonkwearmouthJarrow, it spent many years in the coffin of St Cuthbert. It was discovered in 1104 in his coffin and was venerated as a relic of him. At the Reformation it disappeared form Durham, only to reappear again. A remarkable survivor, this volume and its binding tell us so much about the production of books in AngloSaxon England. Join me as I explore its rich history.
