The Slowest Animals in the World

Follow
Giggling Paws and Pets

Some animals just aren't in a hurry!  From sloths to snails, tortoises to slugs, these are some of the slowest animals in the world.

This is a list of some of the slowest moving animals in the world.

It is not comprehensive.

This list is just to show the extremes of animal movement

There may be other slow animals that could match these, and the numbers are not necessarily accurate.

Animal speed is not always easy to measure, particularly when they move this slow!

The speeds are measured over various short distances.

Other slow animals to consider include: starfish, koala, Nematodes, sponge, slugs, sea anemone and worms

1. Corals

Coral are animals, but they do not move.

The branch or mound that we often call a coral is actually made up of thousands of tiny animals called polyps. There are many other 'animals' that live a very stationary life, such as mussels and oysters

2. Garden snail

Snails move at a proverbially low speed.

They produce mucus to aid locomotion by reducing friction, and the mucus also helps reduce the snail’s risk of mechanical injury from sharp objects.

This means that they can crawl along sharp objects like a straight razor and survive without injury.

3. Threetoed sloth

Famously slowmoving, a sloth travels at an average speed of 0.24 km/h (0.15 mph).

Threetoed sloths are about the size of a small dog or a large cat, with the head and body having a combined length around 45 cm (18 in) and a weight of 3.5–4.5 kg (8–10 lb).

4. Giant tortoise

The giant turtle is the largest known turtle species to have ever existed and one of the world's slowest reptiles moving at a speed of 0.17 mph

Tipping the scale at an estimated 2,500 pounds, the giant turtle was 100times heavier than its closest known turtle relatives.

5. Spider (Tegenearia atrica)

With speeds clocked at 0.53 m/s ( 1.2 mph), the giant house spider held the Guinness Book of World Records for top spider speed until 1987 when it was displaced by solifugids, although the latter are not true spiders.
