The Residency Selection Arms Race: How Orthopedic Surgery PDs can Transform Medical Education

This is a version of a talk I gave at the 2023 American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Annual Leadership Meeting on June 16, 2023, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

NOTES:

1. This was given as the 2023 Michael A. Simon CORD Lecture.

It was an incredible honor to give a lecture named after Dr. Simon, who is quite literally a “pillar of the orthopaedic profession.”

Among many other things, Dr. Simon was the program director at the University of Chicago for 25 years so in advance of the session, I reached out to a couple of his former trainees to get their recollection of him.

One person recalled how Dr. Simon always made sure they did things the right way. That resonated with me.

As a father (and someone involved in medical education), I really believe that showing someone how to do something the right way and insisting they do it that way is an act of love. If you ask me, it’s one of the finest compliments you could give a teacher, and it was an honor to meet Dr. Simon and give a talk named after him.
