In many households, Disney movies have become age old treasures. Loved by children and admired by adults, the tales they tell are often lovely and resolve with a princess finding her prince and the two of them living their happily ever after. Of course there are evil step sisters and wicked sorcerers from time to time, but the princess always prospers in the end.

What you may not know is that the origins of many Disney princesses are not so sweet. The tales they are based on have been altered as to not scar the minds of the children who watch the movies. They’re gruesome, wicked and in most cases quite disturbing, and they’ll make you rethink everything you know and love about your favourite Disney movies and the princesses in them.

Disney princesses have dark secrets that you may never have guessed. In the original twisted tale of Sleeping Beauty, she is raped in her sleep, gives birth to twins and ends up falling in love with the king who raped her. Cinderella’s evil sisters don’t just squish their big feet into her tiny glass slipper. One of them slices of their toes, and the other, their heel, and their eyes get pecked out by a flock of birds in the end. Gruesome. And let’s just say that the real Pocahontas’ story didn’t even come close to the fairy tale ending Disney gave her.
