The Oregon Ponderosa Mine by GIA. In this video, John Woodmark discusses the Oregon ponderosa sunstone mine. He reviews how sunstone gems goes from manufacturing to the market. Oregon sunstone, the official state gemstone since 1987, is natural copperbearing labradorite feldspar. Some examples exhibit red to green dichroism, and fine specimens larger than five carats can sell for more than $1,000 per carat. The road to the Ponderosa mine gains in elevation as the scenery gradually changes from meadows to thick stands of tall ponderosa pines. Plush Oregon sunstones are found in the plush Oregon area. They’re rapidly gaining attention as natural and untreated products of the United States, due to their unique optical and physical properties.
