The Blue Lake of Bau aka Tasik Biru. Bau is a district located 35 KM from Kuching. Tasik Biru used to be a gold mine. It was originally known as "Tai Parit", in Hakka means "Large Drain". This man made lake was operated in the 19th century by Chinese miners known as "Tai Parit Kongsi". It was later taken over by Borneo Company Limited under the name Tai Parit Goldmine between 1898 to 1921. A geologist from Borneo Limited estimated that there are still 28,000 tons of gold remaining inside. The miners went so deep it broke the underground water surface and caused it to flood. Borneo Limited Company then decided to close the mine because it cost too much to pump all the water out.

In 1979, a sad incident occurred there. A school bus with 67 passengers, mostly students plunged into the lake where 28 students and a teacher died. Only 37 survivors.

Since then, there have been many local legends. Locals believe the Spirit King will take a life every two years. It usually targets an outsider. My dad heard of and told me similar local legends.

Others have seen lake monsters. Reports of people who saw three monsters surfaced from the lake made news around 1988. They even estimated the monsters to be about three meters long.

Some believe golden turtles live there. Well, to me this one sounds too good to be true. When I was little, my dad brought me there for a picnic. He caught me a baby turtle. I was too young to remember how it looked like but I remember we released it back into the lake. Who knows, it could have been a golden turtle! It did however pooped yellow poo on me.
