Greg Lukianoff, a First Amendment lawyer and President of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), explains how American higher eduction is broken and why hoping for selfcorrection is unrealistic. The culture on most college and university campuses pushes out anyone capable of observing and criticizing the rampant problems of ideological conformity and censorship. Besides robbing current students of vibrant discourse, it trains the next generation of professors and administrators to further perpetuate this toxic culture. Getting our schools back on track will require stepping back from these institutions, creating alternative systems, and breaking their cultural monopoly on higher education.
