The Dodge Dart Super Stock holds a special place in the world of factorybuilt drag cars. While often overshadowed by other legendary dragsters, such as the Ford Thunderbolt and Chevrolet Impala Z11, the Hemipowered Dart deserves recognition for its formidable performance on the strip. Let's delve into the details of this remarkable vehicle, exploring its engine, body, and the purpose of this crazy car.
The Dart's journey to becoming a drag racing icon began in 1960 when it debuted as a fullsize car. Over the years, it underwent several transformations, transitioning to a midsize vehicle in 1962 and eventually downsizing to a compact in 1963. Initially, the compact version of the Dart offered limited power, featuring only a 273cubicinch (4.5liter) V8 engine that produced modest horsepower figures of 180. However, things changed dramatically when the fourth generation of the Dart was introduced in 1967, coinciding with the height of the muscle car era.
With the muscle car wars in full swing, Dodge revamped the Dart's appearance, imbuing it with a sportier design and introducing a coupe variant. As the Dart evolved, so did its engine options. By 1970, the Dart offered the potent 340cubicinch (5.2liter) LA, the 383cubicinch (6.3liter) RB, and the mighty 440cubicinch (7.2liter) V8. However, before the 440 arrived, Dodge surprised the automotive world by dropping the renowned 426cubicinch (7.0liter) Hemi V8 into the compact Dart.
In February 1968, Dodge made a bold move, announcing the release of factorybuilt Dart dragsters equipped with the fearsome Hemi V8 engines. These special Darts, designated with production code LO23, were purposebuilt for Class B Super Stock racing and came with a nowarranty disclaimer. To finalize the construction of the Hemi Darts, they were sent to Hurst Performance in Michigan, where extensive modifications were made to enhance their performance capabilities.
