The Making of 'Bubur Asyura' In Balakong

Manaweblife

Manaweblife was fortunate enough to witness the making of 'Bubur Asyura' in a small Muslim community in Balakong of Cheras. Watch this video and see what most of us would not have realised this is a tradition that has roots in Prophet Mohamad's time. The porridge is based on a Kelantan recipe and takes over 12 hours to cook and is richly filled with all kinds of nuts, coconut milk, brown sugar and in fact whatever they fancy having included! Luckily, members of community chip in to help and at the end of it distribute their creations to the needy as well as their family members. Indeed, Asyura porridge is a meal specially prepared for the break from fasting on the 10th day of Muharram. There is a historical significance to this asyura day too. Firstly, it celebrates the day Allah saved Prophet Musa from the pursuing pharaohs and secondly, it commemorates the death of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. Syadinna Husein's grandson while fighting liberation from tyranny. Listen to the participants in the making of this unique porridge in the video and be enlightened on a rarely seen traditional endeavour right here in Malaysia.
