The inhabitants of the Sierra Mixe and their ritual of the Machucado on Day of the Dead - Oaxaca

Jorge De León

In the mountains of Oaxaca, surrounded by waterfalls and springs, live the Mixes, an indigenous people never conquered.

We accompany the Mixes in the elaboration of their ritual dish, the Machucado, during the celebration of the Day of the Dead.

And who are the mixes?

The Mixe and Zoque speakers are the descendants of the Olmec civilization. Its first inhabitants come from the south of Veracruz.

The Mixes have lived for 2,000 years on the slopes of Zempoaltepetl, their sacred hill located northwest of Oaxaca.

Due to its remote location and difficult access, the Mixes protected by the mountains resisted the domination of the Aztecs and the Spanish.

Thanks to @Ruta Oaxaqueña for having recorded with a drone about Ayutla.
