The Hadith on Women's Clothing | The Evolution of Hijab 7 | Dr. Shabir Ally

Let the Quran Speak

Dr. Shabir Ally says the hadith that is often used as proof to support the nearcomplete covering of Muslim women doesn't have a connected chain of narrators going back to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He says other hadiths that show the Prophet's wives being incompletely covered are dismissed as being prior to revelation. He points out that it is noteworthy that the hadiths don't go into detail about what women's clothing entails; in contrast they describe men's clothing with clarity and specification. He argues that the hadith about women tearing their garments to cover themselves suggests that the lower length was not well defined, much less the sleeve length and other aspects of a Muslim woman's 'uniform'. Moreover, he says the weaker the hadith collection, the more it includes about women's clothing. All this suggests to him that there was an evolution in thought, and the rule that is now bandied about as the rule for all time is not actually clearly based on the Quranic text or the narratives that are reliably reported from the Prophet, but more so based on cultural development within early Muslim societies.
